If you've ever wished you could jet over to Central Park, take a trip around Macy’s and be back home in time for dinner, don’t give up hope - one-hour flights between London and New York are now being talked about as a serious option.
Granted, we may all have to wait around 30 to 40 years before it’s a bookable reality, but patents for a new supersonic passenger jet, the Concorde 2.0 if you will, have just been approved.
Filed by Airbus with the US Patent Office, the plans describe a rocket-airplane hybrid, which would be faster than the original Concorde, but also more economical.
Where the Concorde was put to bed back in 2003 due to astronomical running costs (transatlantic tickets were £9,000 a piece) and the deafening sonic boom emitted on take-off, the new ‘Son of Concorde’ jet would make use of advancements in technology for a smoother, almost soundless service.
Thanks to a combination of regular jet engines, rocket motor boosters and Ramjet engines which are currently used in missiles, the aircraft would travel at more than four times the speed of sound, and take-off from the ground vertically – yes, like a spaceship - before assuming a horizontal flight path.
According to PatentYogi, a site which explains the ideas and concepts behind new patents, passengers aboard the jet would sit in hammock-style seats, to allow for the change in orientation. And we don’t think they’re joking, when they describe the flight as being akin to the ‘highest rollercoaster ride in the world’.
At the moment the 'Son of Concorde' aircraft is just a proposal, and even Airbus has been keen to underplay the patent approval, given the high number of plans which never actually make it into the production phase.
But we include ourselves when we predict an awfully long waiting list for seats aboard the jet, should these one-hour jaunts to NYC become a reality.
