A new list of the world's top 100 cities has seen London narrowly eclipse its old rival Paris. New tourism figures show that 16.8 million visitors came to London in 2013, making it one of the 10 most desirable cities to travel to in the world, and the highest-ranking city outside Asia.

Paris came next after the UK capital, with 15.2 million tourists flocking to the city of light in 2013, according to figures released by market intelligence firm Euromonitor International.

Hong Kong came top overall, with just over 25 million people drawn to the vibrant and eclectic southeast Asia metropolis. Come see which other cites made the shortlist, along with our pick of hidden gems for each. Jet-set city break, here we come...

  • Hong Kong

    (25.6m visitors in 2013)

    Grab some dim sum at Lin Heung Tea House, a bustling and authentic age-old parlour in the heart of Central or take a leisurely two-hour stroll to Ham Tin Wan beach, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Rent camping gear from one of the village stalls and enjoy a tasty seafood dinner in one of two restaurants. At night, the sky will light up with stars, a rare sight indeed in this frenetic urban hub.
