For most parents, a trip to the local supermarket is all the travelling they can expect with a young baby. Not Karen Edwards, 31, and her partner Shaun Bayes.
When their daughter Esmé hit the 10-week milestone, they packed up their London home and went travelling.
The wanderlust pair stayed in New Zealand for several months before moving on to Australia and Asia. And most impressive of all? They had one backpack between the three of them. To save space, the pair squeezed their toiletries into baby food pouches.
“I was already such a seasoned traveller. I’ve been to nearly 60 countries,” said Ms Edwards, who is a nurse. “Esmé has had so many new experiences. She’s very sociable. She really loves being outside…At times, I felt sad for her that she didn’t have other kids to play with.”
As you’d expect, travelling with a baby did throw up a few hurdles.
“Being in the same room as her all the time, it was hard if she wanted to sleep and we wanted to have a few drinks.”
“We had to take it in turns for snorkelling and diving but I didn’t mind.”
The family travelled for a total of 10 months, vising Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong along the way. Esme is now 17 months old and the family are planning another adventure, which will see them heading back to New Zealand and exploring Cambodia and Thailand.
“One thing I do hope has come out of having a social media presence is inspiring other parents to go travelling and to let them know that having a baby doesn’t have to be the end of their travelling days.”
