Hetch Hetchy Reservoir with Echo Adventure Cooperative’s Nate

Of the five gates into Yosemite, Tuolumne County’s Hetch Hetchy is the furthest north, and in a 2012 survey, only 50,000 visitors entered the park via this gate across a whole year, compared to the 24,000 daily visitors who entered Yosemite Valley in the same period.

It is undoubtedly one of the jewels of the entire park, and the lower footfall means you’re able to enjoy it at its most serene. Ideal for hiking and wildlife spotting, the scenery constantly evolves as you move around the reservoir, revealing new views and landscapes as you progress. Fun fact: Hetch Hetchy Reservoir is the primary water source for San Francisco, and as such, you’re prohibited from entering the water.

We were guided by conservationist Nate of Echo Adventure Cooperative, who was able to provide us safe passage in and out of the park while providing us with information on the history, geology and characters who have inhabited this valley over the years.
