We’re searching for the next wave of female film critics to write for Stylist
Under Her Eye (a pleasing subversion of The Handmaid’s Tale’s foreboding refrain ‘under his eye’) is our new section dedicated to film reviews written by women and we are looking for three new reviewers to join Stylist’s entertainment director Helen Bownass and digital editor Kayleigh Dray.
How do I enter?
Please send a 450-word review of your favourite film, plus a 300-600-word outline detailing why this role is so important to you, to firstname.lastname@example.org by midnight on 31 August.
How will the winner be chosen?
All entries will be read and assessed by our editors, and a shortlist of 20 entries will then be posted on stylist.link/under-her-eye anonymously, so that our readers have an opportunity to choose their favourite piece of writing in September.
The 10 entries with the most votes will be notified via email and invited to a judging day in London in October, which will see them meet with our Stylist editors, film critic Kate Muir, Anna Smith, president of the Critics’ Circle, and Gaylene Gould, head of cinemas and events at BFI Southbank.
They will narrow it down to three critics, who will be invited to write on a regular basis for Stylist.
The three critics will be invited to a mentoring day with the Stylist team in October, which will include a photo shoot to launch them across the Stylist platforms at the beginning of November.
As part of the Under Her Eye initiative, they will attend screenings and film festivals, as well as write and publish paid film reviews in Stylist and on stylist.co.uk. The prize also includes a Membership Plus card for Picturehouse Cinemas.
So what are you waiting for? If you love film and want to be heard, now’s your chance to become part of the Stylist team as a film critic.
You can see the full terms and conditions for the competition here.
Stylist’s Under Her Eye competition will open on stylist.co.uk at 11am GMT on 7 August 2018.
