The final straw
Lid for every pot, straw hat for every head. Still not found the one you want? Take five from us

The entry-level

Straw boaters will always have a The Belles of St Trinian’s place in our heart – prim but incredibly fun. They’re also perfect for the non-committal among us because they’re on the smaller side, don’t need to fit snugly on your head and – should you get bored of wearing yours – can be thrown into the air in a “just won two bob on the rowing!” manner. Also, this one is really pretty. £40, Free People

The long-time love

Toast’s wide-brim hat was handwoven from palm leaves in Mexico. And if that’s not enough to sell it to you, we imagine wearing it to keep the sun out of our eyes as the condensation from a tall cool French spritz drips delicately onto our cotton prairie dress. Obviously this all happening while we pass an evening on a sun-bleached terrace in Mykonos. We’re in heaven, are you? Now £40, was £69, TOAST

The attention-grabber

So you’re the kind of gal who’s already got three hats stacked on top of your wardrobe, are you? Well, let us ask you this: which one are you going to wear when you’re sat in a busy English park on a Saturday, surrounded by other straw hats, and you want to stand out? You buy one decorated with a smattering of sweetly embroidered daisies, of course. £24, Skinny Dip

The almost-bucket

Love them or stare at them in stubborn bewilderment, the bucket hat is well and truly back in business. And like every other 90s staple making a comeback, there is (gratefully) a chicer, more ‘fashion’ version to pop on your head. This two-tone number from Sensi Studio is simple and lovely – and can be made to feel even more contemporary when paired with a 2019 must-read on your lap. £100, Net-a-Porter

The big one

If your accessory-wearing game is more statement-making than mildly jaunty, this oversized number from Ivy Revel somehow finds the fine balance between screaming “yes, I’m wearing a hat!” and slowly consuming you head first. It’s sensibly large in all its commanding glory, and would look delightful with a simple cotton top and some wafty, summer-friendly trousers. £39.95, Ivy Revel

Each week we have the pleasure of bringing you our pick of the pieces every wardrobe needs. Right now, we’re loving Birdsong’s T-shirt dress

Birdsong is a favourite at Stylist Loves, not only because it creates sustainable clothing but because in an industry where 60 million women worldwide earn below minimum wage, they hire female makers who face barriers to employment, offering them flexible work at the London living wage.

But if there’s one thing we’d suggest you buy, it’s their bestselling T-shirt dress. Made from fairtrade khadi cotton, it’s the ultimate easy-to-wear item – the kind of thing you can throw on and still look polished, even if you’re not feeling that way. Simply jazz it up with statement earrings and mules or dress down with white kicks. In fact, Birdsong has loads of ‘chuck-it-on’ options we love, from their Merle button down dress in Ultra Violet to their sage Sanford jumpsuit (more of that lovely colour here). £95, Birdsong

More lovely stuff you need to know

Did you know that 23% of a Londoner’s wardrobe goes unworn? Anthropologie does, and it’s something it wants to tackle. For two weeks the brand is joining forces with secondhand seller TRAID and turning their King’s Road gallery into a thrifting haven with a curated selection of vintage and second-hand garb. Donation banks will also be set up at six Anthropologie branches across the city so you too can pass on something that’s been gathering dust. 18 July-4 August; Anthropologie, 131 – 141 Kings Road, SW3
