Buzzy Herne Hill restaurant Llewelyn’s has long been a favourite of South London foodies, so when it extended its punchy yet pared-back approach to a more casual venue next door late last year, snaffling a table was a priority. A deli offering salads, chunky sandwiches and chic cupboard staples during the day, by night, Lulu’s is a compact wine bar and eatery with a seasonal menu that’s overhauled every few weeks – aka the perfect excuse for a return visit…
“Nestled in a festoon-lit square outside Herne Hill station, I fell for Lulu’s as soon as I spied its cosy candlelit tables,” says Holly Bullock, Stylist’s editorial assistant. “Immediately presented with a bowl of crispy, salty potato matchsticks to snack on while perusing the wine list that’s peppered with lesser-known bottles – including a standout zesty orange wine from indie female-founded Spanish label Parajes del Valle – I was sold. Cocktail fans should try the marmalade martini while pink grapefruit soda makes an excellent stand-in for dry January. With each small plate that emerged – orange-spiked puntarelle, goat’s curd and figs on toast, deep green polenta verde – the flavoursome line-up outdid itself every time. Friendly, unfussy but chic enough that I’d recommend it to my coolest friends, I’d virtually sell my soul to live next door.” 291 Railton Rd, London SE24
