Swapping the stress of the city for wilder surroundings does wonders for our wellbeing – and can even make us treat the planet more kindly. These idyllic green retreats will have you feeling revitalised in no time
For adventure

Cream teas, pounding surf and awe-inspiring beaches: Cornwall is home to some of the best things in Britain. On the north coast, you’ll find another treasure: Kudhva, an off-grid glamping site featuring tree tents, architectural wooden hideouts (aka “kudhvas”) and a six-person cabin in the woods.

Captivating coastal views aren’t the only draw of this remote outpost. Go wild swimming in the on-site reservoir, forage for food, or set up an easel to paint your surroundings. And when night falls, it’s a perfect spot for stargazing. From £95 a night for a two-person kudhva

For learning new skills

Tucked beneath rolling hills in Herefordshire is Brook House Woods: part glamping site, part open-air adventure playground. The imaginative accommodation (think tree cabins, yurts, and even a Hobbit house) is just the beginning of the experience, as the site also offers a wide range of green activities.

Try your hand at woodwork or make your own gin infusion using ingredients plucked from the hedgerows. There’s luxury here, too, with a wood-fired hot tub, tennis court and yoga sessions. Explore the orchards, stroll by the sparkling river Frome, then retire to your room for a beauty treatment. From £180 for two nights in a two-person yurt

For true peace

It’s not often you get woken by the sound of birdsong. But at Elmley National Nature Reserve on the Isle of Sheppey, it’s another day, another dawn chorus. The only nature reserve in the country where you can stay overnight, Elmley hosts regular wellbeing-focused retreats, and has six cosy converted shepherd’s huts looking out across miles of breathtaking wetlands (cottages and a farmhouse are also available, if that’s more your style).

By day, watch lapwings, buzzards and flocks of migrating geese fly over the windswept marshes. By dusk, marvel at the resident barn owls gliding over the reeds. Pure magic. From £85 a night for a two-person hut

For a sense of heritage

The spirit of conservation is built into the brickwork at Old Lands, a family estate in Monmouthshire that’s more eco sanctuary than posh country pile. The cottages, complete with woodburners, Welsh blankets and upcycled furniture, are charming – but the real draw is everything you can see and do.

Wander the yew-tree walk; row around the island on the lake; and learn about local wildlife and food foraging from Sam, the estate’s resident naturalist. Cook using delicious seasonal produce from the walled garden in the estate’s ‘honesty shop’, then book yourself in for a massage. You’ll never want to come home. From £395 for five adults for five days

For animal magic

The word ‘safari’ probably makes you think of big cats, giraffes and elephants in Kenya or Tanzania. But British wildlife is beautiful enough to be safari-worthy, too. At Knepp Safaris, a rewilding project in West Sussex, you’ll spot red deer, Tamworth pigs and herds of Exmoor ponies – as well as nightingales, birds of prey and elusive Purple Emperor butterflies.

You don’t have to stay to take a safari. But with a range of shepherd’s huts, yurts and treehouses in the ancient woodland, you’ll probably want to. From £190 for two nights in a two-person hut

Bounce down the pavement in Stylist’s fitness editor Meriam’s favourite trainers

Nothing lifts my spirits like realising the days are getting longer. Lighter evenings make me feel much less grumpy (seriously, going home in the dark sucks), and I can also run outdoors later at night – one of my favourite ways to work out.

Jogging in the fresh air is a real mood-booster, and these soft, flexible trainers by Adidas and Stella McCartney make it all the more enjoyable. They can be worn in the gym or outside, and combine function and aesthetic: the cushioned sole provides the necessary support, but they also look great with a midi skirt or under straight-leg jeans. Even better, the cuffs keeps my ankles warm on cold nights. Love. £219.95, Adidas
