“Every year for the last 10 years I have invested in a new pair of almost identical Birkenstock Arizona sandals. I’ve had them in black, white, navy (twice), brown, suede, leather, a deep burgundy delightfully named ‘Zinfandel’ and (long ago) metallic gold. I’m not sure if I feel proud or embarrassed at my blatant refusal to step outside of my comfort zone. But no matter, because last year I discovered that Birkenstocks were not just for spring/summer, but for life. I found validation in a winter version of my old faithfuls and I may never wear another shoe again.
As it did for many, lockdown triggered in me a desire for comfort and reassurance which I found in the unexpected form of my first pair of shearling-lined Birkies. We’ve been through a lot together, my Boston clogs and I, locked down through the long winter when house shoes were not only acceptable but encouraged. Granted, I haven’t yet worn them beyond the end of my garden path but they barely left my feet for three months and I’m not planning to remove them anytime soon. The great shoe leveller, whether worn with jeans or a spring dress, they make me feel a whole lot more like me.” Boston Shearling Clogs, £135, Birkenstock
